Porcelain vs Natural Stone Patios, Which Is Right for Your Surrey Garden?

By Patrick Greenwood, GK Landscapes Surrey • 2026-06-11

This is a question I get on almost every site visit, and the honest answer is that there is no single right answer. Both materials make beautiful patios when installed correctly. The right choice depends on your garden, your lifestyle and what you value most. Here's my take after installing both for over a decade.

Porcelain: The Case For

Porcelain is manufactured to exact tolerances, consistent thickness, consistent colour throughout, and a surface that resists staining, frost damage, and moss growth with minimal maintenance. It does not need sealing. A quick brush down is usually all it needs.

Modern porcelain ranges include realistic stone effects, wood effects, and concrete-look finishes that are increasingly difficult to distinguish from natural materials. The large-format slabs (600×900mm and above) create a very contemporary, clean-line aesthetic.

Porcelain is also harder and denser than natural stone, it will not spall or crack under frost, and it holds its surface integrity for 25+ years in normal use.

Porcelain: The Case Against

Porcelain is manufactured. It lacks the natural variation and organic character of real stone, some people find it slightly clinical. It is also harder to cut accurately, which adds to installation time for complex shapes. If a slab chips or cracks, replacement is straightforward but matching colour lots can be tricky if the product has been discontinued.

Natural Stone: The Case For

Indian sandstone, limestone and slate have natural variation that cannot be replicated. No two slabs are identical, the colour, texture and fossil inclusions in natural stone are genuinely beautiful and improve with age. For period properties, cottage gardens and traditional aesthetics, natural stone is almost always the better choice visually.

Sandstone in particular weathers gracefully and develops a patina that many homeowners find more attractive than the original surface.

Natural Stone: The Case Against

Natural stone is more porous than porcelain and benefits from sealing every few years to prevent staining and moss growth. Some sandstones are more susceptible to spalling in hard frost if moisture gets into the surface, though this is less common in Surrey's relatively mild climate. It does require slightly more maintenance to look its best long-term.

My Recommendation

For modern or contemporary gardens and homeowners who want a low-maintenance surface: porcelain. For traditional properties, gardens with character, or homeowners who love the look of natural materials: sandstone or limestone. For anyone who is genuinely unsure: let me visit the site and show you samples in situ, seeing materials in your actual garden light makes the decision much easier.
