These two terms come up in every garden design conversation, but they are not always well explained. Here is a clear breakdown.
Hard Landscaping
Hard landscaping refers to the permanent, structural elements of a garden, the things that do not grow and do not change seasonally. This includes patios and paving, driveways, paths, steps, retaining walls, raised beds, decking, garden structures (pergolas, gazebos, garden rooms), fencing and gates, drainage systems and soakaways.
Hard landscaping forms the skeleton of the garden, it defines the space, creates functionality, and determines how the garden is used. It is also typically the most expensive element of a garden project, and the element where quality of installation matters most. A poorly built patio or retaining wall is expensive to fix; a poorly chosen plant is just composted.
Soft Landscaping
Soft landscaping refers to the living, growing elements, turf and lawns, artificial grass (technically manufactured but in the soft landscaping category), planting beds, trees and shrubs, hedging, flower borders, and vegetable growing areas.
Soft landscaping adds colour, texture, life and seasonal change to the garden. It typically comes after hard landscaping in the project sequence, you lay the patio and build the raised beds before you turf the lawn or plant the borders.
Which Comes First?
Hard landscaping always comes first, both logistically (you need access for machinery and materials) and sequentially (you cannot turf around machinery without damaging it). GK Landscapes manages this sequence on every project we undertake.
