Driveway costs are one of the most searched questions in landscaping, and one of the most poorly answered. Most online guides quote national averages that bear no relation to what you will actually pay in Surrey, where material costs, labour rates and access challenges all push prices higher than the UK average. Here is an honest breakdown based on what we actually quote and install.

1. Surrey driveway prices by surface type

About these figures

These are installed prices for Surrey in 2026, including excavation, sub-base, edging, surface and drainage. They are guide figures, your actual quote depends on size, access, ground conditions and materials chosen.

SurfaceTypical installed pricePer m²
Gravel£1,500 - £3,500£40 - £70/m²
Tarmac (block edging)£2,000 - £5,000£50 - £80/m²
Block paving£3,500 - £9,000£80 - £140/m²
Resin bound£4,000 - £10,000£90 - £150/m²
Porcelain / natural stone£5,000 - £14,000+£110 - £180/m²

These figures assume a standard single or double driveway of 30 to 60m². Larger driveways do not scale linearly, there are economies of scale on labour, so the per-m² cost often falls on bigger areas.

2. What affects the price most?

Surface choice

This is the biggest single variable. Gravel is cheapest because the installation is straightforward. Block paving is labour-intensive, every block is individually laid and tapped into a compacted sharp sand bed. Resin bound is materials-heavy; the resin itself is expensive, and the existing surface must be properly prepared for it to bond correctly.

Excavation and ground conditions

A driveway that will take vehicle traffic needs a sub-base of at least 150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 hardcore, plus the surface itself. If the existing ground is soft or waterlogged you may need deeper excavation. Breaking out an existing concrete or tarmac surface adds £500 to £1,500 depending on size and thickness.

Drainage

Planning rules in England require that non-permeable front driveways either direct runoff to a lawn or have a channel drain to a soakaway. A channel drain across the front of a driveway costs £300 to £800 installed. Permeable surfaces, resin, permeable block paving, gravel, avoid this requirement entirely, which is one reason they have grown in popularity.

Access and site conditions

Narrow access, steep gradients, or surrounding walls that prevent machinery from getting in all add to cost. A job that needs hand-digging rather than machine excavation can be significantly more expensive, this is worth flagging when requesting quotes.

3. Which surface gives the best value?

Block paving is the most popular choice for good reason. It looks smart, adds kerb appeal, individual blocks can be relaid if the drive settles, and it will last 25-plus years if the sub-base is right. The upfront cost is higher than tarmac or gravel, but the long-term value is very strong.

Resin bound is growing fast because it is permeable, looks clean and modern, and needs virtually no maintenance. It resists weeds and can be laid in a wide range of colours. The limitation is cost and the importance of professional installation, a poorly mixed or bonded resin surface will fail quickly.

Patrick's recommendation

For most Surrey homeowners who want a smart, long-lasting front drive: block paving on a properly prepared 150mm sub-base. It looks excellent, adds value, and individual repairs are simple. If you want something truly low-maintenance and modern: resin bound.

4. Planning permission, do you need it?

A non-permeable front driveway typically requires planning permission under England's Permitted Development rules unless you provide drainage. Permeable surfaces (gravel, resin bound, permeable block paving) are exempt. We advise on this at every quote because getting it wrong can cause real problems when you sell your home. Read our full guide to driveway planning permission.

5. Red flags when comparing quotes

If a quote is significantly cheaper than others, ask why. The most common reason is a shallow sub-base, reducing Type 1 hardcore from 150mm to 75mm saves material and labour costs but means the driveway will crack or sink within a few years.

A quote should specify: excavation depth, sub-base depth and type, edging specification, surface specification, and how drainage is handled. If it does not, ask. We provide a full written specification with every quote, you should expect the same from any contractor you consider.

Frequently asked questions

A standard single or double driveway typically takes 2 to 4 days for block paving, 1 to 2 days for gravel or tarmac. Larger or more complex jobs take longer. We give you a clear timeline before we start.
For a front driveway: if the surface is non-permeable and does not drain to a lawn or border, you need planning permission. Permeable surfaces like gravel, resin bound and permeable block paving are exempt. We advise on this as part of every quote.
A properly installed block paving driveway with a 150mm sub-base will last 25 years or more. Gravel may need topping up every 3 to 5 years. Tarmac lasts 15 to 20 years with basic maintenance. The sub-base quality matters more than the surface, that is where driveways fail.
No deposit on most residential jobs. On larger projects that require a significant material order upfront, we may ask for a partial materials payment, always agreed in writing before any work starts.
